Carrying Heroes is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded in January 2021 in Redding, California, with a simple but powerful mission: rescuing horses from the slaughter pipeline while providing life-changing stress relief for veterans, first responders, and their immediate family members—completely free of charge.
When participants first arrive, many describe their stress level as a 10 out of 10. Their most common request is heartbreakingly simple: "I just want some peace."
The horses in our program have their own stories of survival. Rescued from holding pens bound for slaughter, they often arrive severely malnourished, injured, neglected, and fighting for their lives. As these horses heal, they form a unique bond with the heroes who care for them. Time and again, participants tell us how much they relate to recently rescued horses with words like, "How that horse looks on the outside is how I feel on the inside,"
or "I walk with a limp, too, you just can't see mine."
One participant found hope while watching a rescued horse named Braveheart recover from severe starvation and abuse. Seeing his will to survive inspired her to keep going. She shared, "If he can wake up each day and keep fighting to live... so can I."
The impact of these connections is profound. Many participants report a noticeable reduction in PTSD symptoms even after just one visit. Others have told us that the program gave them a reason to keep living when they had lost hope. Every rescued horse becomes a partner in healing, and every life saved—human or equine—creates the possibility of another.
Because our services are provided at no cost to the heroes we serve, Carrying Heroes relies entirely on the generosity of private donors, local businesses, and community grants. Your support makes it possible to rescue horses, provide for their daily care, and offer a safe place where veterans, first responders, and their families can find peace, hope, and healing.
Together, we can save horses, restore hope, and change lives—one hero and two horses at a time.
